"You want to know why I do what I do? It's simple. I can and it's needed. Yeah, maybe in years past I'd be considered a criminal at worst and immoral at best but times have changed. It's a more violent, brutal world beyond the walls of Axios than most people here would like to believe. When there are infected clawing to get in and psychopathic bandits roaming around that would hunt us down for the hell of it, suddenly someone slipping into a drug induced euphoria or throwing down money for a weapon doesn't seem so bad, does it?
In truth, this all stems from history. I've read everything I could get my hands on about how it was back before the Scorch, back when everything was about money and the power it could bring. It doesn't really look like much has changed now. We still have money, albeit a different system, and people are still going to get what they want or need even if they have to do so through dubious methods. The only difference is people like me can now operate in the open. I don't hide what I do. I don't have to. The people of Axios need people like me to provide them what the government doesn't. And if I can enough of a profit to make me one of the most affluent citizens of the city out of offering that service? Well, then there aren't any losers in this scenario, are there?"
A well dressed (for the time) young man looks into a mirror as he straightens a tie around his neck. He gives a short sigh as he turns his often cold brown eyes to the taller young man standing beside him. There's no friendship or warmth between the two, only the formal air of a bodyguard tasked with looking over his charge. The shorter one returns his gaze to the mirror, his 5'9" stature dwarfed by that of his hulking hired protector. Another sigh escapes and he gives a light chuckle while checking to ensure his dark brown hair is sitting perfectly atop his head. Slowly the nervousness of the moment melts away as a certain sense of calm settles over the young man. A thin smirk touches his lips as he realizes he's been in control of the situation all along.
"Now this, I'm not so sure about. She's a nice girl and all, cute even, but this 'marriage of convenience' thing wasn't high on my list of things to do. I guess even in these days the sway of parents can move mountains. Mine keep going on about wanting to preserve some sort of 'legacy', as if there is such a thing these days. I suppose it makes sense, when you look at it logically. There's not much room for love and romance in the world anymore, not when it's gone to shit. We've at least been allowed to time to get to know each other before going through with this and we do get along well enough, so I guess it's not all bad. It does benefit both families, what with her mother being on the council and my father owning the geothermal plant that this place is built around. It could be considered a case of the rich getting richer, though that's a shallow way of looking at it. I've never been much of a 'relationship' kind of person. I don't make friends so much as acquaintances. It's easier to do business when emotions and favoritism isn't part of the equation and before you ask, yes, everything is business. Even this practically arranged marriage is nothing but business. They used to call this sort of thing a corporate merger. It's where you take two empires and bring them together under one banner. With her political ties and my connection to the people of Axios we'll make a damn good team. If we play our cards right we could make Axios stronger than ever. Maybe strong enough for legacies to become a thing again."BEHIND THE MASK...
