SUN FLARES
Seventy years (70) ago, sun flares reached the earth's atmosphere and by the time anyone was able to notice the increase, there was nothing to be done. The sun flares hit the earth and immediately wiped out a large population of the human race. The earth started dying, wasting away to endless stretches of scorched earth. As this happened, the temperature started increasing, leaving greater parts of the world inhabitable. The survivors had to leave many countries, towns and cities behind, struggling to survive.
LOCATION
The Scorch is set in Southern Mexico, Leon. Keep in mind that this is set in the future, so not everything is supposed to be EXACTLY like Leon is in real life. Most of the rest of America is a wasteland, and anything outside of the Scorch is considered - to most, too warm to cross.
THE CLIMATE
The temperatures are as what you'd imagine a desert being like. The air is dry and warm and the sun scorching. The nights are chillier - often so cold people freeze to death. Despite the scorched land, there still some sources of water left, mainly hidden within the many mountains. The scorched lands are sometimes plagued with storms, heavy thunderstorms, sandstorms, wind and occasionally rain. There's little room for anything to grow, although there are some places life can grow - mainly in greenhouses located in the Farmlands.
THE ROT (the disease)
The disease started out as being airborne, which is slowly fading. Although now, the most infectious spread is through bodily fluids, which, given how long it takes for the disease to be detected, can be extremely dangerous to contain. It can spread through things such as saliva. The virus takes anything from a few days, to months to be detected. The way the virus works is that it starts out in the brain, almost like a tumor. It feeds on brain cells and activity and then starts to spread down the nerves and throughout the entire body. There is several stages of the virus.
STAGE ONE - Infection
Like mentioned before, the disease can be very hard to detect, given how it affects someone's brain and not their physical body. The first few days to months, little to nothing happens. The infected is contagious the moment the disease has taken root in someone's brain. Then as the person grows more and more aggressive (both physically and mentally), they start getting crazier and crazier. Speaking in riddles, saying aloof, out of place things. This wears on and on until the infected turns less and less human and more animalistic. The infected will have no choice but to give in to their basic needs.
STAGE TWO - Symptoms
The first symptoms are that people grow more aggressive. It can be a small or a big change, all depending on the person. Then as the person gets angrier and angrier, they'll also become more and more insane. Speaking in riddles, saying aloof, out of place things and acting weirdly. This will increase more and more as the disease spreads throughout the body.
STAGE THREE - The Rot
Once the disease has spread throughout the body and the infected has either completely or partly lost their minds, the disease start effecting the organs and thus, the body starts to decay - to rot. Boils start growing and bursting, the skin turns grey and ashen, the infected starts losing weight and eventually, the body and the host, dies.
IMMUNITY
Some people are immune to the virus. Although people can never be certain, since there's currently no way of being tested of this, most people go with the belief that "if I haven't gotten sick no, I must be immune". The immunity covers both the airborne and the infection smitten through bodily fluids.
TECHNOLOGY
Most of the modern world's technology was either lost or rendered useless by the change of the world. There are still traces left of technology and there are still people around who knows how to use or fix it. Electricity still exist within the world, either supplied by wind, generators or other means (The mountain also has geothermal power plant that fuels Axios (the City) with power). There are cars, albeit rare as many have either rusted or the fuel has already either been gathered or used. Guns aren't COMMON, but can be found here and there, or bought. But generally speaking, the most common weapons that are used are sharp objects or similar things as opposed to guns.
