what's yours?
Carter, I have to thank you for your time.Of course you do. And you've got what you've got, so let's not waste it.Absolutely. Let's start with the basics.Don't we always? How did you get here?Honestly, it's such a boring piece of history I can't imagine why anyone's still interested in hearing it. It's very basic. A family from Paris find themselves in a spot of trouble, and they need to disappear. There's no better place to hide, is there? It's just when the world falls to disarray, there's suddenly no way out. Well, at least there's no convenient way. It's then much more... Convenient to stay. To build a life that echoes the prior. And when that echo overshadows the fortune of your past life, what happens? The desire to leave fades. Successor's - twins, at that - are born and predecessor's die. Now, the city of Axios has us.Us? You and your brother?Who else would dare be worth mentioning? We're the last two of our dwindling ranks, and we're not about to waste our time. Most would say success isn't so easy to find around here, but you've made a name for yourself regardless and you seem comfortable.I'd say so, yes. It's almost like what happened doesn't... Bother you. It's a difficult statement to properly parlay. I can't be so deeply affected by something I didn't live through first-hand. The generations that came after the devastation only know one way of life, and it's this one. My father was never one to preach about the way life used to be, because he understood the very same thing. I recognise the way we live. I recognise a person's needs. Food and water are a growing commodity, so people have everything they need to live on a physical level. But there's much more to it than what sits on your place three times a day.So you made a club.Dominique and I embellished on an idea that found itself bankrolled through years of saving.Tell me about it.When we first opened the doors, we operated under the known belief that there was much more to existence than the bare basics. There's a defined need for the kind of comfort people have forgotten. These kind of ideas manifest in the light of living and become much more than what they initially were. What does that mean?Well, it started as a place we kept open overnight. Then it grew and we started to understand the need for something much more universal. Now, our doors never close. The place... Never closes?Don't act as if this is new information; we've been running this way for years. And what is it you can do there? As I said, we're very accommodating. But you haven't explained that.Because it's very literal. It's business. If you want a drink, we've got one. If you want something harder, chances are we've got that, too. If you want to gamble your life savings - illicitly collected or not - I'd say we're the only place in the city that'll cash out if you win big. We never close. We are always open. We are always your haven. And it's called?Purgatory.Purgatory?Fitting, no?How do you deal with legal troubles from illicit activities?I've always found that keeping everything in-house usually grants you a few pardons. I'm never to delve into the nature of our clientele, but if keeps a vast amount of negativity off the streets and under our own fault, it seems as if we're doing the city a favour. What about your employees? Do they know what they're working amongst?Everyone who sets foot in Purgatory knows what they're bargaining for. You're perfectly capable of a clean life if it's what you're looking for. You must understand; we take care of our own.Do they take care of you? Are they loyal? For the most part, I see loyalty as how much you put in a person's hand in a city - or a world - like ours. If that were the course of your question, I'd say yes; they're all incredibly loyal.Have you ever had any negative instances?Of course. That's life, isn't it? But they're very few and far between cases. We don't take lightly to being cheated. You and your brother.Especially my brother. As far as reason goes; well, offender's should prefer my company. Not to say his response is bad by any means. No, that's simply business. You seem to care for your brother very much.I can't imagine why I wouldn't. Dominique and I have equal parts on the way this place is maintained. Those perceptions are always incredibly similar; such a concept then determines who might deal with which situation better. One of us is always attainable. The place is never without a Chevalier at its helm. But as far as my personal belief? Yes, I love my brother. Dismal as things may be here, he is the one person I can wholeheartedly trust. That's it? There's no one else in your life? Not at this present time, no.Are you looking?I find the very thought of searching for someone to adore pointless and exhausting. These are the kind of matters that happen in their own time, in their own way. I rule very few people out when it comes to potential. Interest is something we as humans have very little control over. That's a very open way of thinking about it.It's important to be. Just as it is important to be forward.Forward?Example; I find you interesting.Excuse me?And the longer we continue talking about life and work and love, the less time I have to pursue that interest. Now, if you deemed me someone you might consider spending excess time with, I'd suggest cutting this short. You could learn a lot more in a setting far less formal. But that's entirely up to you.
I didn't think you had anymore questions.BEHIND THE MASK...
who are you really?
SAMPLE: Carter took her question on, remaining silent for a time as he gave it a decent amount of thought. Normally he was short with his answers; direct enough to shoot down the opinion of another person. because he was always right. "It, like many things, is an inevitability." Carter started carefully, "Fighting the inevitable is futile. There are something's we can't control." But dammit all if he wouldn't try.
He revelled in the silence between them for as long as she allowed it to last. But he knew she was going to question him again eventually - once she found her nerve. It wasn't a mood killer.
Rather, her confidence enhanced the air about her.
"Because I find you alluring." Carter replied simply, exhaling the rest of his air on a sigh. "Enthralling. You capture my attention. Your face. Your voice. You're simply captivating." And it felt revitalising to be able to say it. But nevertheless, he kept his blue eyes fashioned to the ceiling. His voice remained low, quiet.
Like everything he said was just for her; "For me, you feel like an inevitability."
