what's yours?
A woman of 5’6” entered the room, self-posessed and confident. Her dark brown eyes took in everything with a moment’s glance as she sat down at a table and nodded to the man across from it. “I trust we can get this over with quickly?” she asked, her tone brisk and pure business.
“Of course, Ms. Alvarez. First, I would like to ask about your employer. How long you’ve been working for him?”
“Just under a year now.”
“And what were you doing before that?”
“I was working for anyone who paid,” she offered shortly, her tone cutting him off. How similar she was to her mother. The only difference between them being the services being rendered for their clientele, though sometimes even that hadn’t been so different. Luckily, things had changed with her new boss.
“I see. And you’re happy with your new job?”
“It’s a job, sir,” she offered a bit wryly. She was being paid. There wasn’t much more to be said.
“Right. Do you have any family?”
“No, sir,” she replied simply. Her mother had left when she’d found out that Selina was sending her paychecks. Kat had told Selina to take care of herself, apparently not realizing just how much harm her leaving had actually caused her daughter… but that had been four years ago and what’s past was past. It wasn’t anything Selina found worth dwelling on.
“Sorry to hear that.”
“Don’t be.”
“... Ok then. Can you tell me how you got into security?”
“I was trained by a professional martial artist… or so she claimed. Jimena was a cripple and sometimes a colleague of my mother’s, but she watched out for me when I was younger and I brought her food and water with my mom when things got bad. ‘Women have to look out for each other, because no one else will,’ is something my mother drilled into me every day."
The man looked up at that, but Selina ignored him.
"Jimena taught me quite a bit, and I got to put it to good use at an early age. There were quite a few fights I lost, but I learned quickly. I was also a good runner when things got out of hand, so there were only a few times when it got ugly,” she admitted, a rare grimace showing before she blinked and her expression returned to a careful neutral, “Either way, what I picked up from experience and from Jimena was enough to get me started in security and training with a task force. The rest is history.”
“Your mother? I Thought you said-”
“I was assuming you meant current family.”
“Ah, right. And you assumed correctly. I didn’t mean to pry. What was it your mother and Jimena did?”
“They were escorts,” she replied simply, no hesitation and no expression. “Is there anything else?”
“Oh, um no, not for the moment. I’ll contact you and let you know if I need more.”BEHIND THE MASK...SAMPLE:
who are you really?
Selina could walk these streets with a hell of a lot more confidence than most could. Hell, her life was practically a damn fairy tale compared to the vast majority. She knew how to blend in well though, keeping her head far enough down to not be taken notice of, but keeping her movements smooth and steady so as not to be mistaken for an easy target. It was a delicate game that could end up being a matter of life and death in these uncertain times.
She didn't mind too much though, she was one of the few in the city who owned a gun, thanks to the generosity of her employer, and she kept it well hidden on her person at all times. To go unarmed was foolish, and she wasn't about to risk anything. Why she was still pressing on after all this time was still a mystery, but she didn't mind. Surviving each day as it came was her goal, and working for Trevor was a part of staying alive.
After all, she highly doubted he'd let her keep the firearm if she decided to leave. There was more to it though, and even she could admit that she still held out hope of finding her mother. Despite the woman's leaving her four years ago, Selina understood why her mother had gone and was searching to find her before something or someone else got to Katerina first.
Selina paused as she noticed fighting up ahead, and her hand casually drifted to where she kept her gun. It was an absolute last resort... not because of some altruistic bullshit that didn't even exist in this fucked up wasteland, but because it would mark her as a target. Guns were rare, and people wanted them enough to kill for them. Ammo was also expensive and Selina wasn't a wasteful person.
